The Best Bar in Edinburgh

Dear Friends and Family,

I am roaming once again!

I have stumbled out of the Isles of Orkney and into Edinburgh:

Long time readers know that I struggle to make a blog post 1) on time and 2) under 10,000 words, but I am making exceptions to both these tendencies in the name of alerting you to a bar in Edinburgh I was at barely an hour ago:

The Captain’s Inn on College Street is one of the best bars I have ever been to in my life. I do not say this lightly! But this place has:

  1. Live folk music every night
  2. Open mic song and poetry with musical accompaniment (and patrons are not timid about taking the stage!)
  3. Cheap, deep pours
  4. Radical queer inclusivity
  5. A bartender who already knows what your favorite whisky ought to be, even if you haven’t drank it yet, and they WILL have a bottle on tap for you. Thank you especially to Helen behind the bar, for introducing me to my new favorite whiskey, Smokehead! Thanks also for the travel recommendations to Islay, I will be visiting some day ๐Ÿ™‚

In summary: I am drunk.

Furthermore: the Captain’s Bar is the best bar in Edinburgh, no contest. This is the bar you had in your head when you envisioned yourself guest starring in an episode of [Cheers, Queer as Folk, insert your favorite campy TV show here]. It’s an instituion in a shoebox, and the vibes fit better than your favorite pair of sneakers. If you are in town, go! If you are thinking of visiting, go! If you are so much as looking in the general direction of a world map, go!!! And go soon!!! You won’t be disappointed ๐Ÿ™‚

Cheers!

Stay well everyone,

Evan ๐Ÿ’™

P.S. Your regularly scheduled blog updates will return soon enough ๐Ÿ’™
